Welcome to Fort Hunt / Waynehood
The Ft. Hunt area of Fairfax County is situated on the banks of the Potomac River just a stone’s throw away from the Mount Vernon Estate, home of George Washington. It is 8 miles south of Old Town Alexandria with easy access to the area’s shopping, restaurants, and historic district. Ft. Belvoir Army Base is a few miles south of Ft. Hunt making this area very appealing to military personnel and their families. Commuting is a breeze from this location with easy access to the George Washington Memorial Parkway, the Capital Beltway/Interstate 495, and Huntington Metro.
The Waynewood subdivision is one neighborhood located within Ft. Hunt. It was developed by Clarence Gosnell, Inc. starting in the 1950’s and consists of approximately 300 acres and more than 700 homes. The neighborhood has 2 outdoor pools, a playground, a tot lot, 3 tennis courts, 2 basketball courts, and an elementary school. The 4th of July is a huge celebration in the neighborhood with a brunch, parade, rides and games at the pool, and a chance for neighbors to visit with each other. The annual BBQ cookoff is another neighborhood tradition that has become tremendously popular and brings friends and neighbors together on a warm September afternoon.
The Potomac River runs along the east side of Ft. Hunt and with it the George Washington running and bike trail which links the Mount Vernon estate to Old Town Alexandria. The trail offers beautiful views of the river, the shores of Maryland, and all the wildlife that lives within it. You may even glimpse an American Bald Eagle, two of which have been known to nest along this section of the trail.
There are predominantly single family homes in Ft. Hunt neighborhoods. Brick colonial, split level and ranch style homes were the popular models in the 1950s and 60’s when the area was being developed. Many homes have been updated, expanded and renovated, blending new and modern touches to the traditional houses.
